About

A playful, visual way into Krishna’s world

Kanhaland shares Krishna, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the Hare Krishna movement through exploration and play rather than walls of text: picture stories, maps to wander, music to join in with.

Sharing Krishna with the next generation, one play at a time.

Why this exists

pṛthivīte āche yata nagarādi grāma
sarvatra pracāra haibe mora nāma

“In every town and village on earth, My name will be sung.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, in the Chaitanya-bhagavata (Antya 4.126)

Five hundred years ago, that sounded impossible. Then in 1965, Srila Prabhupada crossed the ocean on a cargo ship called the Jaladuta, and within a few years the holy name was being chanted on city streets all over the world.

When we went looking for a good place to learn about Krishna, Mahaprabhu and the Hare Krishna movement online, especially for young people and kids, we found very little that was engaging: mostly long pages of text, or videos made for people who already know the stories. Kanhaland is our attempt to fill that gap.

Not more screen time: better screen time

We’re not trying to keep anyone, young or old, on a screen for longer. Most of us already spend time on our phones and tablets every day. This is a way to spend some of that time on something that feeds the heart.

  • For newcomers, especially younger people, a gentle and playful first meeting with Krishna consciousness.
  • For devotees and their families, a way to stay close to Krishna between temple visits and seva, wherever they are.

It is a small offering towards Mahaprabhu’s words: a place where anyone, of any age, can meet Krishna through stories, sacred places and play.

Why “Kanhaland”?

Kanha is the loving name that Krishna’s mother and friends called Him. Nimai is what Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was called as a child, before He grew up to be Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Kanhaland is where they come out to play, and where you can play along and learn about them as you go.

Who it’s for

Anyone who’s curious about Krishna, exploring alone or together as a family, with special love for the little devotees. The site is arranged by what you’d like to do: Stories to read, Play to tap and help out, Quizzes to test what you remember, and Explore to walk the maps.

How the stories are made

Each story is retold in plain, short language from the Srimad-Bhagavatam and other traditional sources, and names its source. Curious minds can open “Tell me more” for more. Every picture on the site is drawn for Kanhaland, in one hand-drawn style.

What’s coming

Who is Krishna?, Explore Vrindavan (with Mahaprabhu and the Goswamis), Mahaprabhu’s journey, the Jaladuta voyage and the Krishna storybook are open now. Mahaprabhu’s storybook, the Hare Krishna movement’s story and the Holy Name come next; see the roadmap.
